Why do people from London travel to Amsterdam for holidays? Do you have better cinema's, concerts, hotels. parks? No its because Amsterdam represents a different more relaxed "liberal" culture with its coffee shops, sex industry and artistic and political freedom of expression. Forcing elements of this culture out of the city in the shortsighted lust for greed is a crime against both the indigenous population of Amsterdam and its visiters. Without bookshops and "community" spaces like Het Fort Van Sjakoo Amsterdam's alternative culture and "chic" would never have grown to the internationally famous and popular status it enjoys today. I for one will be less inclinded to visit an Amsterdam that values high rents above higher levels of tolerance. I suggest you find a way to save the Het fort Van Sjakoo bookshop on Jodenbreestraat and other similar assets of Amsterdam!
