Dear Sirs,

I am an occasional customer at the Sjakoo bookshop on Jodenbreestraat, a place where I can often find academic material for research and teaching that is difficult (or impossible) to find elsewhere in Amsterdam. So I was angered and disgusted to visit the shop today and learn about the 900 % rent increase that has been demanded by Woningbedrijf Amsterdam beginning September 1st.

I am sure one can claim 'economic logic' for this increase. But it is a cynical and callous act to demand a rent increase from fl 580 to fl 5100 in one go. The Woningbedrijf must know that this increase will force the bookshop to close. For those who make this decision, I suppose the Jodenbreestraat will then become more 'respectable' without the Sjakoo bookshop.

I have nothing but contempt for this attitude. The bookshop is one of the best sources in the city for up-to-date material on international politics and philosophy. It is also a non-profit organisation. It is completely mistaken to assume that all 'commercial
