Nineteen years ago Bob Breving started teaching union members at Roosevelt University. He began to learn about labor history through the papers the students wrote. I read and wrote about John Peter Altgeld, Mother Jones, Walter Reuther, A. Philip Randolph and Eugene V. Debs. A. Philip Randolph, a prominent leader in the civil rights movement is almost never referred to in the telling of the civil rights struggle. I decided to tell also about Delores Huerta and Regina Polk, women important to today. These biographies focus on their contributions to improve the lives of working people.
