Eduardo Galeano: Wind Is the Breath of Time, the Storyteller’s Voice Travels on

Uruguayan Eduardo Galeano was an activist, visionary, and storyteller who began his hugely influential career with the publication of Open Veins of Latin America in 1971, which set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. After this success, Galeano’s writing became increasingly lyrical and inspired by the storytelling of South America’s Indigenous peoples, while remaining politically engaged and prophetic. This book picks up where Daniel Fischlin and Martha Nandorfy’s previous book on Galeano left off, focusing on timely and urgent themes in the last four books he wrote in the twenty-first century. Through his distinctive narrative style of short vignettes–tightly packed explosive stories–Galeano explores what it means to live as mortal beings with a finite amount of time on the earth, waxing and waning between despair and hope. As a hunter of stories, Galeano’s yarns place us, as his listeners and agents of history, in a web where past and future come together to create a present full of possibility.
