The act of hunting, chasing and killing animals (‘prey’), to feed on, has been of tremendous importance for humanity. For a very long time, even after humans started to develop agricultural practices, their livelihood depended on it. As a result, stories, myths and imagery around hunting have played a vital role in arts and culture since their very inception. Think of cave paintings, hunting still lifes, Renaissance paintings of Diana (goddess of the hunt), or the ‘art’ of taxidermy. In addition to the traditional use of the word hunting, the term inhabits our consciousness in a myriad of ways. Language inspired by hunting is often used when we seek, or search for something. We might be encouraged to ‘chase after the truth’, ‘chase our dreams’ or when it comes to romantic endeavors, to ‘shoot our shot’. Cupid, the god of desire and erotic love, famously uses a bow and arrow to exercise his powers. Such an approach to love—or more in general to ambition—has an undeniably violent effect (historically, especially in men). Is the act of pursuing, chasing, seeking, always inherently violent? How might we engage with the world around us in a way that is less about ‘getting’ things, and more about mutual exchange?
