The printed circuit board (PCB) is the backbone of the general-purpose computer. It is where the material meets the mythic, the impersonal meets the intimate, the technical meets the feminine. This is the sphere of the motherboard: the world-rewiring circuitry-scale architecture, and the beating heart of the computer, phone, or laptop that you are reading this on.
Increasingly, futures are drafted not in parliaments or town halls, but in the meeting rooms and venture offices of Silicon Valley. The motherboard — unseen and secretly glamorous — serves as the substrate of this cryptic co-opting of the future. Its ideology? Frictionless progress, data extractivism, optimization as morality, and the techno-spiritual promise of utopia. The figure who emerges at the forefront of this shift is ‘the techbro’: a new cultural archetype who, in many ways, retains the messianic attributes of previous Californian generations of hippie idealists, except, he also may be a corporate billionaire. In other words, the motherboard is an architecture that does not merely process information; it scripts imaginaries.
