‘Trans*textual Shakespeare: The Arabic and Persian Pre-texts of Romeo and Juliet’ also places Romeo and Juliet (c.1595) in the tradition of the Islamic philosophy of Sufism, contextualizing it as a form of ‘travelling knowledge’. The book clearly shows how the Islamic philosophy of Sufism had always moved with the eighth-century AD Arabic story of “Majnun Layla” till it reached Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet. The philosophy of Sufism was adapted smoothly into the Shakespearean text. Such religious adaptation in a European work contradicts any previous incorrect representations of Islam based on racial or national prejudices.
