Voice is a key pathway for women to achieve greater citizenship, rights and empowerment which is mostly associated with political engagement, collective action and influence.
Based on first-hand narrative perspectives which bring together analyses, reflections and experiences of feminist researchers and activists working on voice in selected countries in South Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America; the book produces analytical narratives of what has happened to feminist voice in different countries. These narratives depart from the existing debate on women’s public and political engagement in formal institutions and move towards an analysis of feminist activism for building and sustaining constituencies through raising, negotiating, legitimizing women’s voice under different contexts and the impact of these strategies and processes on women’s citizenship.
This unique book explores the influence of global trends, such as, development of transnational linkages, rise of conservative forces, NGOization of feminist movements, and an increase in epistemic power of donors to shape feminist agenda, all of which have created opportunities and challenges for feminist voice and activism.
