Bahrain’s Uprising

The 2011 revolutions that started in Tunisia and swept across the region have been extensively covered, but until now Bahrain has almost been forgotten from the events that have dramatically changed the region. Bahrain’s Uprising examines the role of the protests and reveals a complex society defined by its conflicts in which oil has enriched the ruling elite while the nation as a whole remains underdeveloped and impoverished. Drawing on testimonies from those involved, this book provides a voice for the lived experiences of ordinary Bahrainis and describes the way in which a dynamic culture of street protest continues to hamper the efforts of this ruling elite to rebrand itself as a liberal, modernising monarchy.
