Living on Hope While Living in Babylon

This book researches the lives of Christian activists such as Clarence Jordan, Dorothy Day and the Berrigan brothers in relation to how they attempted to respond to, and create alternatives to, the racism, violence, and privileging of the wealthy in a ‘Christian nation.’ He makes a case for how their embodiment of Christian practice, while not always a ‘success’ was, nevertheless, faithful as it stood in line with people like Daniel, Meschach, Shadrach & Abednego, Jesus and the disciples, as well as all others who chose God, in times of conflict, over their kings, Caesars and presidents. In many ways, this book is a nice bridge between the work of more popular writers such as Shane Claiborne and Gregory Boyd, and that of the more theologically dense writers in the Christian tradition. While this book is very accessible, it offers more theological content than the previously mentioned writers. If you like the writing of Clairborne and company, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. If you don’t, because you find that they require a more substantial theology, then this book may be for you.
