The Amsterdam Crates – Las Cajas de Amsterdam

In 2016 the art historian Almudena Rubio discovered among the famous CNT-FAI archives, deposited since the end of the Spanish Civil War in the Amsterdam based International Institute for Social History, a forgotten and never before cataloguized collection of photos originating from the Foreign Propaganda Offices from the CNT-FAI. While uncovering this hidden treasure and trying to establish the contents of this extraordinary photo archive she found an extensive collection of photos made by two Jewish women from Eastern-Europe: Kati Horna and Margaret Michaelis. Various years of categorizing and investigation led to a travelling exposition through Spain and finally this remarkable book. It contains a lot of good quality prints of a selection of the photos made by Horna and Michaelis and also it shows the way in which these photos were used in the propaganda and publications produced by the CNT-FAI and their foreign, mainly anarchist, supporters. The photos are therefore special as they don’t show the usual war photographs but rather the life in the rear guard. Life of the militia men and women behind the frontlines, gains of the social revolution that took place between July 1936 and May 1937, life in the collectivised farms, factories and workshops, the street vendors in Barcelona. Some photos look rather staged, others are obviously taken while the people on the image were not aware. The book starts with an extensive description of the history of the so called “Amsterdam Crates” of the CNT-FAI archives and how these crates landed in Amsterdam, after a World War 2 stay in England and the occupation of the IISH/IISG in 1979 and 1984 by CNT activist who demanded the archives to be returned to the legalized CNT (after the death of Franco in 1975). Rubio also extensively describes the lives of Kati Horna and Margaret Michaelis and analyzes their work and their lives before and during the Spanish civil war and in exile in respectively Mexico and Australia. This book and its author pay tribute to the uniqueness of this photo archive and the work of both talented women photographers. This is a bilingual edition: the texts are both in Spanish and in English.

En 2016, la historiadora del arte Almudena Rubio descubrió entre los famosos archivos de la CNT-FAI, depositados desde el final de la Guerra Civil Española en el Instituto Internacional de Historia Social con sede en Ámsterdam, una colección olvidada y nunca antes catalogada de fotografías procedentes de las Oficinas de Propaganda Exterior de la CNT-FAI. Al descubrir este tesoro oculto y tratar de establecer el contenido de este extraordinario archivo fotográfico, encontró una extensa colección de fotos realizadas por dos mujeres judías de Europa del Este: Kati Horna y Margaret Michaelis. Tras varios años de clasificación e investigación, se organizó una exposición itinerante por España y, finalmente, se publicó este extraordinario libro. Contiene una selección de fotografías de gran calidad realizadas por Horna y Michaelis y muestra también la forma en que estas fotografías se utilizaron en la propaganda y las publicaciones producidas por la CNT-FAI y sus simpatizantes extranjeros, principalmente anarquistas. Las fotografías son, por lo tanto, especiales, ya que no muestran las habituales imágenes de guerra, sino la vida en la retaguardia. La vida de los milicianos y milicianas detrás del frente, los logros de la revolución social que tuvo lugar entre julio de 1936 y mayo de 1937, la vida en las granjas, fábricas y talleres colectivizados, los vendedores ambulantes en Barcelona.Algunas fotos parecen bastante preparadas, otras están claramente tomadas sin que las personas que aparecen en ellas se dieran cuenta. El libro comienza con una descripción detallada de la historia de las llamadas «cajas de Ámsterdam» de los archivos de la CNT-FAI y de cómo estas cajas llegaron a Ámsterdam, tras permanecer en Inglaterra durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la ocupación del IISH/IISG en 1979 y 1984 por parte de activistas de la CNT que exigían que los archivos fueran devueltos a la CNT legalizada (tras la muerte de Franco en 1975). Rubio también describe ampliamente las vidas de Kati Horna y Margaret Michaelis y analiza su obra y sus vidas antes y durante la Guerra Civil Española y en el exilio en México y Australia, respectivamente. Este libro y su autor rinden homenaje a la singularidad de este archivo fotográfico y a la obra de ambas talentosas fotógrafas. Se trata de una edición bilingüe: los textos están tanto en español como en inglés.
