The Luddites’ war on industry

This article started off as a review but soon turned into some sort of synopsis arising from the reading of two books, both written by radical ecologists. ‘Rebels Against the Future’ by KirkPatrick Sale, published in 1995. This is the most recent in depth book on the subject and it’s written in an exciting, but well sourced way. Like the best novels you can’t wait to turn the pages. John Zerzan’s two essays, ‘Who Killed Ned Ludd?’ and ‘Industrialisation and Domestication’ are dryer but his analysis is sharp. They were first published in book form in 1988. Reprinted from `Do or Die’ as a pocket size pamphlet.
