African Development and Governance Strategies in the 21st Century

NEPAD, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, is an attempt to chart a new course of good governance and effective development for the continent. In this book, African economists and social scientists reflect on its previous experience with alternatives to structural adjustment. The aim is to chart viable policy directions for the future, and to assess the prospects of NEPAD measuring up to the challenges involved. The economist Professor Adebayo Adedeji, in honour of whose 70th birthday the essays were compiled, is well-known for his pioneering work on the African Alternative Framework to Structural Adjustment, at a time when the damage caused by structural adjustment was only just beginning to become clear.
